Second Line-Poem

Through the streets, feeling so alive
The beat, the rhythm, it’s like a natural high
It’s a celebration of life, a joyful parade
Where troubles and worries just fade away

We walk through the gallery, hand in hand
As I admire the artwork, I understand
The power of expression, the stories it tells
Odums’s mural captures the heart and the spells

In the heart of the 3rd Ward, a social club’s name
Where men and women gather, it’s all about the game
Second-lining down Washington Ave, they go
United in spirit, a vibrant flow

A young man, taken too soon, stands tall
His suit on point, his presence enthralls
Locs and beard groomed by Twist’s skilled hand
He’s a symbol of strength in this vibrant land

Pallbearers’ step, footwork in sync
Alongside his truck, adorned with a distinct
Second-line club’s logo, Saints symbol gleams
A picture of him, a tribute it seems

His family rides in the carriage, filled with love
His mama, girlfriend, son, and daughter, rise above
The grief and pain, finding solace in the dance
Their spirits lifted, given a second chance

His older brother, in a white button-down
Fashionable tie and suspenders, he’s renowned
Dancing in a trance, sweat dripping down his face
In his grief process, finding a sacred space

We stop at a bar on Board and Washington
Regulars part the crowd, creating a junction
For those who need a break, a drink, or a bite
Vendors line the route, offering a delight

BBQ sizzling, the aroma fills the air
A cart with cold drinks, a vendor with flair
Premade Daiquiris, waiting for their debut
A taste of New Orleans, something fresh and true

This is the second line, a cherished tradition
Bringing people together, a joyful transition
A celebration of life, where music takes flight
In the heart of New Orleans, where joy shines bright

So we continue the journey, hand in hand
Immersed in the culture, where art and love expand
Through the streets we’ll roam, guided by the beat
Embracing the spirit, making memories sweet

The second line lives on, it’s in our soul
A testament to resilience, making us whole
In these moments together, we find our groove
In New Orleans’ embrace, we’ll always move.
